Yes - this really is the voice of Gilbert O`Sullivan ! Recorded around 1967/68 - most probably in the garden shed of his family home in Swindon where he composed and recorded lots of his early demos on an old upright piano. This was before Gilbert had found success in 1970 with MAM Records and was seeking success on other labels . He already had the `Gilbert ` image but he was experimenting with vocal styles . This is what he calls his ` old man ` voice , also used on another early song ` Disappear ` . Gilbert says this voice was inspired by Bob Dylan`s early recordings . He has also said that he was a great fan of the comedian Spike Milligan`s nonesense poetry and wrote similar poems himself . When you consider these early influences , Dylan and Milligan , it explains what you are listening to here ! The video of course is just for fun , but the great Eric Sykes actually appears in another Gilbert video - the official promo for the song SO WHAT .
This recording is unavailable on any of Gilbert`s official releases , but many years later in 1994 he recorded a new version for his album BY LARRY .
