An interesting song from Gilbert`s 1993 album SOUNDS OF THE LOOP. Gilbert is never afraid to address controversial issues in his songs and this one deals with the dilema many Irish people faced when they were prohibited by law to get divorced because the Catholic faith decreed that marriage should be for life in the eyes of God. A couple of years after Gilbert wrote this song a referendum was held in Ireland and the law was changed in 1995 permitting couples to divorce.
This is a request from one of our friends in Ireland - Andy from Gilbert`s home town of Waterford . This one`s for you Andy !

@pawz63 Thanks for commenting on this .To be honest I didn`t know much about this law until I researched it for this video - and I live in the UK . It was unbeliveable and thank God it`s changed now but it still divides the population . I hope your family problems are resolved soon - it`s sad to watch people you love in trouble and there`s nothing you can do to help .12 years назад

@aldridgeo UNBELIEVABLE! I HAD NO IDEA BOUT THIS IRISH LAW. LOVE CAN GO FROM LOVE TO HATE IN A VERY SHORT TIME, IT ONLY MAKES SENSE TO HAVE TO BE ABLE TO DIVORCE,,IT'S BETTER THAN ABUSE..MENTAL AND PHYSICAL..WHICH I HAVE IN MY FAMILY AS WE SPEAK. IT'S HEARTBREAKING.13 years назад

@birdman404 To be honest I would agree with you but I understand people have strong views on the subject . They say it destroys family life but it can`t be healthy for children to grow up in a home where their parents are arguing all the time can it ? People often get on better once they have seperated. That`s just my opinion - I think Gilbert`s words are spot on here.13 years назад

@NEVERMORExxxxx Thanks again - Gilbert often says that he doesn`t like the way some pop stars preach their beliefs on stage and in interviews - he said recently " It`s like watching politicians playing guitars ! " . He prefers to do it in a more subtle way through his music occasionally - this song is a good example .13 years назад

@aldridgeo It`s a very powerful song actually - Gilbert was brave at the time because many people didn`t want the law changed . If that statistic in the video is correct - YES 50 .3 % - NO 49. 7 % - it shows how split Ireland was at the decision and it must remain a touchy subject to this day. Interesting that Ray was saying " Something must be done urgently " and 2 years later the law changed ! Thanks for reminding us about this song Andy.13 years назад
