I love this piece played at a bit slower tempo; it gives one a chance to relish the sounds of the organ a bit. I have heard it played at many different tempos, some just too fast in my opinion. As a solo piece, I play it a bit faster than this, but, again, I think this tempo is very nice. These two are extraordinary players if you have ever heard them live. Both are well educated and marvelously musical, not to mention, very nice, kind people.

Nice to see some critiques of this performance. Helps me evaluate how I hear it and react to it.

Just listened to several other videos of this piece after reading these comments. This is the only version in a pleasant, majestic tempo. Others were just showing how fast they can play it. That isn't feeling the music. Wonderful performance, thank you for posting.

I like how they switch manuals. But just looking at their arms and wrists they might be using piano techniques which are not effective on an organ. The result is blandness. It reminds me of Glenn Gould playing the harpsichord or organ; some of his fantastic piano techniques for creating contrast just don't work on the harpsichord or organ.

Un petit peu trop lent comme tempo, il faut plus de puissance, de grandeur !

I enjoy this playing. See above for a synthesizer arrangement. You'll see I also take the tempo slower than many. I suppose it's a matter of taste and mood.

Americans here are criticizing this because it was not played by an American but by Japanese: envy?

@markpianoman What? Are you nuts? One of the best performances I've heard! Get some musical culture.

To understand my comment, you need to have read Geoffrey Payzant's book where it discusses Gould's early musical experiences as an organist. I believe the phrase was 'the delightful chiff of old baroque organs' or something like that. That was I think in my mind when I heard this: they certainly bring that out. I was forced to be more explicit to gtimney and will uploaad what I wrote to him.
