With his smooth, emotive vocal style and virtuosic piano abilities, Gene Austin rose to fame and became an icon of his time. Upon the advent of the electric microphone in 1925 performers no longer had to project their voice out of necessity, and Gene quickly took advantage of this ability to sing in a new way to his audiences, pioneering a style of singing that he named "crooning" which would evolve and become popularized by such well known acts as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.
