Death metal, like any metal subgenre, is loaded to the brim with shitty ass fuckin bands that you have to practically wade through to get to the gems. Being one of the least accessible forms of metal makes it even harder. I just find it annoying that there's such a standard for brutality nowadays. If death metal was the standard in which all metal was judged, there would be no room for the classics (Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, ETC.)
