agree with your basic point, but as far as the velvets go you're kind of off base. lou had been cutting doo-wop singles since his mid-teens, and at the time he formed the core of the velvets he was a staff songwriter for a low-budget record label. john cale was a classical music prodigy who was in the u.s. studying under a scholarship with aaron copeland, and even before the velvets he was working with big names in the avant garde scene- sterling and moe were beginers, true, -to be cont.

Sometimes when a group of people know each other and become friends before learning their instruments, the musical results are more interesting than when four guys who are already professionals get together and meet. Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, these guys, none of them knew what they were doing, but they went into some rooms and garages for a couple of years and didn't come out until they had made history.
