According to Wikipedia, he died in Budapest in 1982. He was fairly well known in jazz circles, but this was the one thing most people remember him for in the US. From what I've read about him, "Night Flight" was a complete departure from his usual style.

I haven't known what is smooth jazz up to now... also I'm Hungarian and I haven't known that Gabor Szabo ever existed... what a shame that he is absolutely unknown in his homeland, and I am happy that I have discovered him
