A few people asked me if I could play and post Frank Zappa's famous 'Black Page No.1' drum-solo. This is a piece Frank Zappa used to audition drummers with. It's completely written out and it's called the "black page", because once he finished writing it, the page kinda appeared black :-). To this day this composition remains one of the most challenging drum pieces.

So, thank you Frank Zappa. Here's The Black Page No.1

Edgard Varese's influence on Frank is somewhat clear with this piece! Frank was a genius, one in a billion.

+Sebastian Victor Micu Zappa WAS a percussionist. You must be trolling for adversarial replies. Either that or you know absolutely nothing about the man and his prolific catalogue of symphonic, rock, jazz, and experimental noise compositions. His first appearance on tv was playing percussion, in his late teens/early 20s.Zappa was a composer FIRST and foremost. His polyrhythms were so intricate Steve Vai had to invent new notation marks in order to transcribe his music (You can find the transcriptions in early 1980's Guitar Player mags). There's a reason a multitude of the best drummers and percussionists in the world played in Zappa's band. You've got over 65 albums to choose from.Everything Hank J. Levy taught is within those albums.Envelopes.Listen and learn, my dear.;)Trolling trolling trolling....

@ Sebastian Victor Micu you clearly know nothing about nested tuplets or you would understand the kind of independence it takes to play this.

You all understand that Zappa was a percussionist before he was a guitar player, correct? And that he was a composer? The Black Page is extremely complex in its usage of tuplets and nested tuplets. What Marco played here (fantastically, by the way) was only the drum solo section. There is a melody to this piece. Yes, it's strange, but that's Zappa.

You are not providing an argument as to why this is overrated. I am a drum instructor, and I have yet to master this piece, nor can I write one that has this kind of melodic idea. And yes, I do think a guitarist can write a good percussion piece. Zappa's ideas don't always make sense, but trust me when I say that you need to listen to his music with a completely open mind to get the meaning he's trying to convey. You don't have to enjoy this piece, only give it the respect it deserves.

trust me, this thing is overrated. You really thing a guitarist can write a good percussion solo? Any drum instructor can write a better one, meaning this would be one of the worst out there!

listen to it. There is a distinct melody in it that really requires a lot of listening (sorry for the redundancy, but it's true!)

Yes it's played through once then repeated but the final 16 (i think) bars are different during the repeat. I might have my numbers wrong but that's basically how it's composed. Obviously the melody that is played over the piece does not feature repeats (i.e through-composed). No doubt there will be many pieces of music composed this way although I don't know of any exampled.

you are great, but you have to admit this is a stupid composition with nothing cool in it. why is this even made popular? no one would listen to this!

Not sure on (1), I think its a bit different in the end on the second run. Regarding (2), there are lots of pieces with that structure. Its a very common structure in jazz where you have a scheme with a set of chords and melody and just run trough it all the time, as long as preferred. Bright size life from Pat Metheny is an example.

Awsome, I enjoyed this very much. Fair play to you!

Thanks! It took me a while to notice that the structure of the piece is: repeating the whole thing again, so it "begins" one more time in the middle, and plays the whole thing again. My questions: 1.) am I right on this? 2.) Is there any other piece in music history with this structure, I mean consisiting of "two sections", where the second is just the repetition of the first one?...

I directed a music video for the "Freaking Fukin Weirdoz" way back in the 90s. I gave Marco a kind of toy drum set, cause it looked cool. Wasn't meant to be played, but he played the black page on it... I hated him ever since :)
