The Four Preps were Marvin Inabnett, Bruce Bellard, Glen Larson and Ed Cobb; the group had many hits including "26 miles"and "Big man". By 1964 they had started to fade and the Beatles' novelty provided them with their last charted hit: it reached number 85 in three weeks on the chart in March of 1964.

back in those days everyone was trying to cash in the beatles sucess by slapping the beatles name on anything...t would sell though, anyway, these guys would never be even close to be at the same level of the beatles...remember that song "we love you beatles" by the carefrees, it was even coverd in spanish by the chics "yo quiero un beatle" or "i want a beatle for christmass" by becky lee beck or dora bryan's "all i want for christmass is a beatle" and the list goes on, heck, every rock group wanted to sound and look like them

Yet the British Invasion led by the Beatles overwhelmed the popularity of many American pop singers leaving few survivors. However 4 Preps and others whose record sales fizzled during British invasion era still continue to draw audiences to live performances on the oldies circuit. ☺

On this day , March 9th, 1964, Capitol Records released a song called 'Letter To The Beatles' by The Four Preps. The lyrics describe a boy lamenting the fact that he's lost his girlfriend to The Fab Four. On its first day, the record shot to No.85 on the charts and it looked like The Preps were going to have another hit on their hands. Unfortunately they had included a few bars from 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' without permission and Capitol was forced to withdraw the single to avoid a lawsuit.

I don't know who is angry about it, but I like it, and I've been a Beatles fan for 25 years.

Yes, in 1960 there were 273 bands in Liverpool alone. The Beatles became famous in Germany, then came back to England and started doing more stage shows, then TV and radio, and slowly built up a following, then conquered the U.S. It took a lot of effort to promote them in the U.S. as well.

This was before my time, but I know history. The Beatles were NOT that popular in England. The main reason is that there were dozens of other groups similar to the Beatles in England. In fact, the Beatles got their first big break in GERMANY, not England. They skyrocketed to fame when they came to the U.S.

It was called the "British Invasion". Just before they arrived, the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean and a few others were always on top of the Top-40 list.

People.....this is a sarcastic "spoof".....the Beatles were a "novelty" back then and many folks thought they'd never last. I remember seeing their first album up in Washington State and it said "Meet the Beatles". I looked at it and thought...."Ya Right.....these guys will just fade away". This is a humorous kind of song.....poking a little fun......GET OVER IT.

John, Paul, George and Ringo actually exploited this guy's girlfriend that way? I doubt it.

The Four Preps were a great group. I enjoyed the Beatles, but their entrance into the music world changed the direction of American music. (Of course, they were only part of a huge complex of factors involved in a huge cultural shift.) I do miss the music of the 50's - much of it was better musically than what we have been hearing over the last few decades. The Beatles were excellent composers and muscians for sure.

On this day in 1964 {March 9th} the Four Preps released "Letter to the Beatles" on the Capital Record label... It stayed on the Billboard Hot Top 100 chart for three weeks and peaked at #85, but then was pulled from stores because the song used some bars from "I Want To Hold Your Hand" without permission... Sadly original members Ed Cobb and Marv Ingram both passed away in 1999; Mr. Cobb at age 61 and Mr. Ingram at 60...
