Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band formed in 1967 in London.

The only original member present in the band is its namesake drummer, Mick Fleetwood. Despite band founder Peter Green naming the group by combining the surnames of two of his former bandmates (Fleetwood, McVie) from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, bassist John McVie did not play on their first single nor at their first concerts. The keyboardist, Christine McVie, has, to date, appeared on all but two albums, either as a member or as a session musician. She also supplied the artwork for the album Kiln House.

"Albatross" is a guitar-based instrumental by Fleetwood Mac, released as a single in 1969, later featuring on the compilation albums The Pious Bird of Good Omen (UK) and English Rose (USA). The piece was composed by Peter Green.

The composition suggests a relaxing sea setting, with cymbals imitating the sound of waves and a dreamy solo from Green's guitar. It contains only two chords, Emaj7 and F#m, and could be seen as an early ambient work. It is often assumed that Green used his Les Paul but he said it was his Fender Stratocaster, as there is subtle use of the vibrato bar. The Les Paul that Green used in Fleetwood Mac has a nasal tone like that achieved in the in-between positions of a Stratocaster, and heard in the song.

One of the most amazing pieces of music ever. Close your eyes and become the albatross, the drum beats are the birds heartbeat and the cymbals the crashing waves. Magic!

Though John McVie didn't play on the debut single, he and Mick had both played on the tracks pre-dating that which were later to be released on "The Original Fleetwood Mac", including the 'Fleetwood Mac' instrumental. And surely, they are British rather than 'British-American', based on their origins, not their line-up changes...?

On of the greatest instrumentals ever. Kind of feels like a Joe Meek production! 'cept he was dead!!

Peter Green squeezed as much soul and emotion out of one note than most guitarists do out of a hundred notes.

On Holiday in Newquay, Cornwall. In a pub, summer evening, looking out of a big window to the sea. A few years ago now. Guess what I put on the jukebox?
