I stand corrected. In southwest va we always played and sang a song with identical guitar work and it was always called wild wood flower. It was about some boys finding a flower on the farm and having parties. The original lyrics have nothing at all to do with marijuana. I was wrong.

I noticed someone bitchin about people talking about marijuana. The wild wood flower is marijuana. The songs about marijuana. Marijuana is a flower that grows wild in the woods. The songs about a couple kids who find a flower and smoke it and share it and get in trouble because of their innocent enjoyment of a naturally occurring plant.

Actually cannabis was completely unknown in Appalachia until modern times, There is a drug reference though, the blue-eyed white amanita mushroom, otherwise deadly, recognized for the blue dot (eye) on the cap, as being hallucinogenic rather than fatal. All the flora of this ballad have a poetic significance. Originally an old Scottish tune, the flower once in place of the amanita still traditionally remains a mystery.
