Poor Lady Margaret. There are many, many versions about Lady Margaret, Fair Margaret, Sweet William, and none have a happy ending. This song arrived from England/Ireland with the earliest settlers and then made a transformation here. The legend continued...and again there is no happy ending. "Fair Margaret and Sweet William" is from the album, "Songs From the Mountain" released in 1998. Dirk Powell, Tim O'Brien, and John Herrmann wanted to stay true to the Appalachian roots of the mountains and did an incredible job of this on their album.

These three musicians were so taken with the book, 'Cold Mountain' by Charles Frazier, that they wanted to make a companion cd. This is prior to both the movie and the movie soundtrack for 'Cold Mountain'. The album is filled with authentic music you could hear throughout the mountains during the Civil War period and before. You can hear it now if you are extremely lucky. Enjoy the past and now the future! "Songs From the Mountain" is an enduring testament to the music of the Appalachians. ENJOY!!!

I love those songs. Much of the music on this album came from the settler's from UK, and then were adapted here. (check out The Songcatcher movie if you can.) I am more familiar with the Celtic versions than the mountain versions. This is also a similar chorus to Raggle Taggle Gypsy & Black Jack Davey. I think they all came from the Child Ballads. Thank you so much for commenting! I really enjoyed this & would appreciate any info you'd like to add or give. My best, Moppet

You are very welcome. I've been ill & let my responses go. I appreciate every comment and wanted you to know. I love the album, too! I got it in the mountains of North Carolina years ago. They made this from reading the book, "Cold Mountain", BEFORE the movie was made. After seeing your comments to the other person, this does remind me of "Matty Grove" from "The Songcatcher" sung in the movie by Emily Rossum. Music seems to get around. i.e. Raggle Taggle Gypsy. (I love Planxty & Nic Jones also!)

The Planxty (& Christy Moore) versions are based on the Nic Jones version. On listening here I see other versions are quite different (the tune I mean, the lyrics are similar). This is a great album BTW - thanks for posting it !

Have a listen to the beautiful "Little Musgrave" AKA "Little Matty Grove" - I love the Planxty version, grew up with it in the 70's. Nic Jones's version is earlier. The "How did you like ..." chorus is the same, style of singing is so different I find it difficult to point out other similarities but they there :)

@mouldybear I've heard several versions of this. Some of them are about this length/verses & some longer. It might depend on what the artists has heard & chooses to do. I love all versions I've heard. Thank you for your interesting comment. It's correct & I love to get input! It is much appreciated...on a different note. Please honor the BLACKOUT on March 7 & 8 & don't watch utube. If you are willing you could even shut your Channel down. That's up to you. Thanks again.Moppet (Barbara)

I love this performance of "Lady Margaret and Sweet William" I do love unaccompanied singing but isn't it a little foreshortened?

@jessie91scot I will have to take your word for it. I researched and found that Child published "English and Scottish Ballads" and that this song is similar to Barbara Allen (which I had picked up on my own). I can't tell which the ballad is, but am very interested in how the song fits into history. I love it when a song has historical context: i.e. my version of "The Bonnie Earl of Moray" by The Standing Stones. Thanks for your comment. It's appreciated. My best, Moppet

@KistoDreams Thanks for finding this album. It is a true treasure. I have had it for sometime. I bought it in the mountains years ago & it doesn't get "old". I love most every song on it. I appreciate your comment very much. My best, Barb

Thanks for posting this album Barbara, I wasn't aware of it. I'll be back to listen to more. I have the Cold Mountain soundtrack in my collection which is wonderful - although I couldn't watch the film, to harsh for me.

lovely song. this song actually came from Scotland though, which is not the same as Ireland/England (especially in its historical context, very different indeed!!) :)
