Interview Norway 1986 (translation in English)
Thanks to Stein Vidar for translation.
Joey: "We don't call ourselves anything special. We usually say we're a rock band, melodic rock band. It's difficult. There might be somebody who can come up with some good names for our music, but there is no good name."
John: "Euro rock!"
Interviewer: "So it's the melodies that's the most important thing?"
Joey: "Yeah. It has to be powerful as well. That's we want, power and melodies at the same time."
Interviewer: "John Norum, we said you were Norwegian. We don't say so because we've got badly hidden patriotism, but you are really Norwegian."
John: "That's right."
Interviewer: "You've got a Norwegian passport too. Prove it."
John: "I actually have to prove that I'm Norwegian. Look!"
Joey: "Norwegian!"
Interviewer: "And you're not gonna change it?"
John: "I'm not gonna do it. I'm proud of being a Norwegian. I'm not gonna become a Swede."
Interviewer: "You lived in Vardø for two years, right?"
John: "One and a half year. Then I moved to Sweden. Since then I've been living in Sweden my whole life, you could say."
Interviewer: "You're the big brother of Tone Norum, who's also got a career within the same Europe style, with Joey Tempest as songwriter and producer. But as a guitarist, which idols do you have? It was the Journey producer who produced your album. Have you listened to American guitarists a lot?"
John: "No, it's not. It's more from England and Germany, from the beginning. It's the usual idols that most guitarists have. Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker, etc... "
Joey: "But Neal Schon is also a cool guy."
John: "There's been more and more good guitarists coming from USA as well, Edward Van Halen for example. My current favorite."
Interviewer: "Is Europe a band who enjoys itself more on stage or in the studio?"
Joey: "It's on stage, maybe. It's live."
John: "Yeah, I think so too, maybe. But it changes."
Joey: "It varies. When you've been on the road for a long time, you long to get in the studio, and when you've been in the studio for a long time, you long to get on the road and play. So it varies."
