Found the citation: RCA Victor 20-2231. Etta's version was released in March of 1947 (there's an ad for it in the 4/3/47 issue of Billboard). The Basin Street Boys were definitely ahead of her by about 9 months (they recorded it in May 1946 and it was advertised in the 6/29/46 issue of Billboard)..

I've seen the recording date for this tune as March 11, 1947. However, the Basin Street Boys released their version in June 1946, on Exclusive, owned by Leon Rene, who co-wrote the song.with his brother Otis. What label and catalog number was the Etta Jones recording?

You bet this is the original - I have the 78. Jack Mcvea on tenor - in my opinion Jack never got the recognition he deserved. See if you can find 'Slim's Jam', where Slim calls Jack 'Jack Mcvoutee'. Bird and Diz get to speak also on the record. A classic.
