This original version of Eric Whitacre's song "Sleep" was later rewritten due to copyright reasons. The text is Robert Frost's poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening."

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound's the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

Wow, this text gives a completely different feel to this piece. Kind of like a big Chirstmas carol.

Copyright laws are so silly. It boils down to egotism and selfishness.I like both texts. What a testament to a composer when a song is great with two separate sets of lyrics.

I actually tend to agree with Eric himself after hearing this. When I first heard that the Frost poem was the original setting, I thought surely that would be masterful because frost is awesome and Eric is awesome. But in a simulcast a few days ago he was talking about the evolution of "Sleep" and said after he had the Silvestri setting, he realized how poorly he had set the Frost poem. I wouldn't say it is a bad setting. It is rather good, but I think the Silvestri lyrics are a better fit than the Frost.

interesting to hear the differences in composition too, harmonically at "with miles to go before I sleep" and the absence of the soprano sustain at the end

As much as I love Sleep - this poem just goes so perfectly with the music. It's too bad the Robert Frost people didn't understand just how magnificent this was. Perfection. So beautiful.

Gosh, I thought the lyrics in Sleep couldn't get any better and then I discover that this marvelous poem was the original thing...

We are singing this piece with the text written by Silvestri (which is indeed beautiful!) but after hearing this i would love to sing it with the original lyrics. Frosts poem creates a very intense feeling with strong pictures for me. In this or the other way impressive music which Whitacre wrote. One of my favorite a cappella pieces.

I cannot understand a word they are singing........ have your own accent but you should sound clear in words...

I agree with Takigan's comment. As magnificent as this is, sleep just has it ALL!

I'm sitting here listening to this thinking "You know, I think Silvestri's lyrics actually fit this piece better".......but then the recording played into the final build with "....and miles to go before I sleep" repeating over and over, and it was there where I realized the true tragedy of how this piece with these lyrics never came to fruition. What a beautiful meld of lyrics and music. And it also carries with it an unintended parallel, with how long we have to wait yet until 2038, before the original lyrics are restored. Miles to go before we can sleep, indeed.

Actually, his website says that it expires in 2038... But who cares. He's not gonna use it anyway.

Honestly, linuxlover, he'll be dead before the copyright is released. It expires in the 2060s or so.

It's amazing what the difference in texts does to change the tone of the piece. This version gives a completly different feel than Silvestri's poem. There's a sense of motion, of story-telling, that lacks in his setting, because of the nature of the text. The climax of this version, with that last line of the poem, is so perfectly set! Gets me every time. That said, I appreciate both versions. I believe some of the notes in this version are a bit different too. The revision is easier on my ears.

My college concert choir is performing this version.....I wonder if that's illegal...Anyhoo, I love the story this version tells. It really shows the piece's original intention well! I love both versions!

I wish the sopranos didn't go so flat in this version. It's almost perfect otherwise.

Oh, just read his website, he's not going to use this text even after the copyright is released. Darn. :(

I think Silvestri nails it and each poem has its own distinct character, amazing when you consider it.

I think this recording gets a little flat towards the end. Still very good.

Maybe it's because I've sang "Sleep" two separate years with my choir, both times conducted by Eric Whitacre at a concert, that I prefer the new Sleep lyrics. It is cool to hear what it was originally supposed to be, though! Fun to sing along to :)
