This is well played and professional but it lacks the guts, power and chaotic feeling of the original Hendrix version. Nothing wrong with it but I like the original a lot better.

It's Eric Johnson's unique tone and of course it will never sound as good as the Hendrix version. Cut the guy some slack though, as if he isn't one of the best guitarists already.

Technically it's a good rendition, the thing that is missing is the tone. Listen to Gary Moore's rendition on Blues for Jimi. Trumps this.

I am a big E Johnson fan. The guy walks on water as a guitarist. That being said, I understand why a good number of people don't dig this. I think the main problem with EJ covering Hendrix is the the guitar tone that serves him so well in his own material. I would describe his tone as smooth, round, and refined. The tone that Jimi had I found to be more jagged electric and ruthless. The voice is another issue as Eric has a choirboy vibe. Notwithstanding the aforementioned, I'd like to hear him play Hendrix with a basic rig similar to what Jimi had back in the day, not his own wonder rig. I think the effect and impact would be different. What Eric does get right is the feedback nuances. I haven't heard anyone else do this live as well as EJ; albeit, I haven't scoured YouTube.

There, to me, are only two guitar players that can do Jimi justice: Eric and Randy Hanson. Where Eric's playing is more technical and close to note/tone perfect, Randy has the 'feel'. We saw Eric play an entire Hendrix set(15 songs) at the Dallas Guitar Show in the spring of '12...it was astonishing performance.Long Live Jeff Beck~!
