It was part of show business in the '60s and '70s (and '80 if you include "hair bands"). They'd throw wigs and makeup on them even if they weren't going bald; everyone had to have an un-natural pile of hair; they probably were trying to get 30 year-old men to look 18, but they did sometimes end up looking more like 30 year old women. He was a great talent though, perfect voice, good song writer.
