****Annotation added 24 Feb 2014: "In all, some 480,000 Allied forces took part in the Gallipoli Campaign, at a cost of more than 250,000 casualties, including some 46,000 dead. On the Turkish side, the campaign also cost an estimated 250,000 casualties, with 65,000 killed." Source: http://www.history.com/topics/world-war-i/battle-of-gallipoli

****Note added 25 April 2010:

When I was asked to create this presentation for a Remembrance Day assembly, I didn't know how I would show an "anti-war" song at an event that is supposed to honour our veterans. At the same time, war and military conflict was such a distant concept for our students, I wanted to some how make history relevant to them, let alone an "Australian" song that most of the our middle school students have never heard.

The more I listened to Bogle's words, the more I realized that this song was about more than a moment in history. It's about how history repeats itself and the great sacrifices that are made during war and how futile it all is if we fail to learn from our mistakes.

Making the transition from B/W to full colour to coincide with Bogle's words "We started all over again," I wanted to show how war is part of our past, present and (unfortunately) future.

Great sacrifices have been made because of war. Bogle asks "What are they marching for?" I say they are marching to honour those sacrifices. If any veteran is offended by this video, I truly do apologize.

April 25 - ANZAC Day

November 11 - Remembrance Day

"Waltzing Matilda" is a very famous Australian folk song and a "Matilda" was the name given to the pack that Australian farm workers carried on their backs.

To "Waltz Matilda" meant to carry your pack of belongings through the bush.

The song "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle is about Australian soldiers who fought against Turkish troops and died in the Battle of Gallipoli in World War I.

Mixed with pictures from Gallipoli are pictures of past and present Canadian troops because this song and slideshow was played during a Remembrance Day assembly at a Canadian public school.

Information about this song was taken from this web page (which is NOT mine) that talks about Eric Bogle's performance of this song:

Judging by a lot of people's comments, I should have used another source for info and double-checked the data. I hope that Bogle's message reaches beyond just numbers--because all sacrifices big or small are significant.

A great song but unfrorunately historically incorrect. It was the British who landed at Sulva Bay in particular the Yorkshire Regiment. There was a landing of aussies but on the third or fourth day. Best read the history of Gallipoli before making comments . There were twice as many British Troops lost at Gallipoli than Anzacs. Also no Australian soldier wore tin hats during the first world war. However its a powerful song and everyone who fought and died there should never be forgotten.

not to discredit the Canadians, but this song was written about the ANZAC troops that were slaughtered & maimed at galipoli....this debacle was planned by Winston Churchill and cost him his position as first lord of the admiralty.....

Lovely song, truly gives us an idea of the horrors of war. People should understand more about what happens when soldiers go off to war. So many kids just have no idea. A kid at my school laughed when we had a silence for VE day, and i know i should not have done it, but i was so angry, i walked over to him after the silence, booted him in the legs, grabbed him, and threw him into the desk. Followed by '' THATS FOR FUCKING LAUGHING, cunt.....''It is so sad that men and women die so that people can live a free life, so that they can laugh, and everyone just laugh at the fact they died. It upsets me so much.

By the way Australians were not the only British Commonwealth troopers at Gallipoli or France....and every soldier under intense fire has in his own way his own Gallipoli. Unfortunately the Australian government is using Gallipoli to distract Australians from some skulduggery they are up to with China USA and Israel and as well to pretend Australia is still Australia when in fact it's like a giant refugee camp with little left of a great people. If you were born before 1960 you might know what I mean.

As an Australian, I just thought i would point out that your description of the song waltzing Matilda is wrong. A Matilda is a swag not a pack and it was used by Wonders, not farmers. like rovers or people who roamed the land. Other that that good work

Joel Price - You are a goose.Eric Bogle wrote this song depicting Australia's involvement in the Great War, The War to End All Wars. Australians formed part of the British Imperial Forces. We fought with and alongside every nation within the Commonwealth. Many of those nations are the reasons we didn't suffer more casualties.e also saved those nations from suffering as well. What I say to you as a current soldier is get a grip champ. This song is written for the Australian war veterans from WWI. Does that mean it is irrelevant for all other Australian war veterans? Does that mean other nations who fought alongside us and against us at the time (Turks & Germans) are not able to feel some pride and sadness at this horrible historical event. The greatest loss of life known to man at the time?I am disgusted by your comments and I take offence to your diatribe. You are pathetic and I challenge you to apologise to all that you have offended by your ignorant, ill informed and misguided comments

Sad and beautiful, an epitaph to those young men who died often before having a life and their youth taken away, by giving all they had. May the Lord always have His arms around them and what they endured and suffered, for their fellow man--- this is so so sad, and there is nothing to say, except so many thanks for their sacrifice-- their ultimate sacrifice.

Hellfire Pass: Thailand, 4.00am on ANZAC day 2015, we had been there since 2am and an elderly voice called out from the pass of 3,000 people and began singing this song. Chills up my spine and we all joined in with the "and the band played waltzing matilda" and the anonymous voice kept singing until the end. And in that darkness my past father's face appears and tears began, not Burma Thai Railway, but Papua New Guinea and I knew the conditions were similar. Never forget why we live in Australia the way we do today: "lest we forget".

Eric has written what I consider the most powerful anti-war song ever set to music. God bless him.
