This reminds me of one of the stories my mom has shared with me from her past. She had met this woman named Gabriela, and both were only four years apart, my mom 17, Gabriela being 21. My mom is on the shorter side, about 5'0 (152cm), and she was an independent, hard-working woman. In Mexico, she had started working in factories at the age of 12. She finally moved away from her non-loving family at the age of 15, and started living by herself in the big city. She always yearned for riches. Clothes, makeup; anything a poor girl like her would want. She would dream of meeting the guy of her dreams. My mom was a very beautiful lady, though she suffered from low self-esteem. Not only was she beautiful from the outside, she had a heart of gold! Many men had fallen for her. The owners of the factories she worked at had young, handsome sons who were interested in my mom. They at last stopped playing around with the many other high-class women when they met my mom. Anyways, she met Gabriela at the last factory in Mexico she ever worked in. Gabriela was my mom's first ever friend, and was the complete opposite of my mother; outgoing, cheerful, and optimistic. She was also much taller than my mom, about 5'10 (178cm). My mom admired her very much. She thought Gabriela was the most beautiful woman she had ever met. Gabriela was one of the only people able to befriend my mom, and to ever make her crack a smile. One of the only people to make her happy. One of the only people able to make my mom talk to other people. When they became friends, they were both single, and this resulted in them speaking about cute guys most of the time. My mom remembers them both joking about being rich heiresses. They loved walking in parks filled with beautiful trees. They loved going to cafés and gossiping. Everyday after work the two would wait in line for the public bus, like many other people. To everyone else they were passerbys in the middle of a busy city. Passerbys with their own life. While walking in a park once, the two grew tired, and found a bench to sit on. "Oh, look! There's a guy coming, let's pretend we're wealthy ladies!" Gabriela whispered loudly, earning a huge nod from my mother. "Well then, my dear friend, I think I should go now, as my chaffeur is probably waiting for me in my large limousine." Gabriela said loud enough for every person nearby to hear. "That's fine friend, I have to go to a party later too. Make sure you come to my aunt's wedding with the most rare dress. She is marrying a famous fashion designer." "Oh, that's right! We need to go shopping sometime. Next time I'll give you a ride in the expensive car my father bought me. Goodbye!" That would be how they would joke around. And Gabriela left, leaving my mom to daydream in this lovely park. One day Gabriela had exciting news for my mom. "Guess what? I'm going out with Alfonso!" My mom's face turned to a shocked one. "Wait, tell me later after work." So they got off the public bus, and arrived at 'their' park. "You're with Alfonso? How? And he's about 30 years older than you, Gabriela." "Yes, he asked me out, and he's really kind. He has money and is handsome. He buys me many gifts. He has told me I could invite you over to one of our dates." My mom was glad Gabriela found someone. The two would dream of meeting their 'special someone.' Especially my mom, but it was Gabriela who hit the jackpot! However, my mom disliked Alfonso. The first time she ever met him, he immediately hit on her. She viewed him as a playboy. She knew he had had numerous flings with many women. "Maritza, why don't you come with me to the mall? Alfonso gave me a lot of money, so don't worry, I'll get you anything!" My mom went, only because she wanted to spend some time with Gabriela. Gabriela did not work at the factory anymore. She picked my mom from work with the car Alfonso had just bought her. My mom didn't want Gabriela to buy anything for her. In the end, Gabriela convinced my mom, resulting in both of them carrying many bags of clothes. Of course my mom loved them, she had always dreamed of buying expensive clothing. "If you don't need to go anywhere else, you can come see my house." House? Since when did Gabriela live in a house? My mom thought this, as she knew Gabriela lived in a 3-story apartment building. Gabriela drove to the house she now lived in."Did Alfonso buy you this car?" My mom asked, admiring it. "Yes, do you like it?" My mom nodded, "It's nice." Gabriela added, "Whatever is mine, is also yours." They soon arrived, and went through large gates surrounding the property. Gabriela parked her car in the large garage, and both stepped out. My mom's eyes instantly widened, she never imagined her very own friend living in a huge house! It seemed like a mansion to her! "Wow, you live here!?" My mom gazed at the beautiful architectury of the large house. "Alfonso bought this house for us. We're getting married this month. " Another reason for my mom to widen her eyes. "What? You've only known each other for two months though!" My mom almost shouted. "I know! It seems like I really am in a fairytale. He's my Prince Charming!" My mom did not reply, she did not know what to say. Gabriela invited my mom inside, which shocked my mom even more. These people even had maids! "Good evening Ms. Gabriela, would you like to have dinner?" Gabriela shook her head. "No thank you, do you want anything Maritza?" "Ah, no, thank you." After the maid left, Gabriela asked my mom, "You wanna come upstairs and see my dress?" After my mom agreed, the two ran to the second floor, and Gabriela led her to her and Alfonso's bedroom. Again, my mom was shocked from all the luxury. Gabriela and Alfonso eventually did marry, but it was short-lived. Sadly, my mom saw Gabriela less and less, as the latter would become busy. She would attend events with Alfonso, meet many other business owners, and had many appointments with Alfonso's family, among other things. They finally met one day. Gabriela informed my mom of some bad news. She and Alfonso were on the verge of separating. Gabriela, now 22, was cheated on by Alfonso several times. He would drink too much and abandon her. His company was losing money. My mom tried her very best to console her only friend. Another year passed of the two not speaking since then, Gabriela 23, my mom 19. My mom decided to come to the United States. She never saw Gabriela again after hearing the bad news. My mom would call, and Gabriela would never answer. Months passed and my mom called, a maid answered. "Hello? Abarca Residence. " "Um, hello, is Gabriela present?" "Who is this? Ms. Gabriela isn't living in the Abarca porperty anymore. ""What? It's her friend, Maritza. When did she leave? Do you know her number, or any way I can contact her?" "Maritza? She left a few weeks ago. I heard she went back to Culiacan, where she grew up. I only have Alfonso's number. He may know how you can contact her. " So my mom dialed Alfonso's number, and he actually answered. "Hello? Alfonso Abarca speaking. " "Good afternoon, it's Maritza speaking." "Maritza? It's a suprise to hear you. How are you doing?" "I'm fine. Listen, do you know how I can contact Gabriela?" "Oh, but I do have an emergency number of hers." Alfonso proceeded to give my mom the number. My mom quickly dialed. "Hello? It's me Maritza." "Hello, who is this?" A young, female voice was heard. "Oh, it's Maritza, Gabriela's friend. Do you know if I can speak with her?" "I'm Gabriela's niece, my aunt isn't here anymore. I'm sorry, I've heard her talk about you before, so I know who you are. She's not in Culiacan anymore. I have no idea where she is, or her number. If I do see her, I will tell her you called. "And my mom lost the niece's number. That was the last thing she ever heard of Gabriela. Never talked to her again. She moved on, and evetually met my dad, and had me and my sister with him. Unfortunately, they didn't last either. She only remembers Gabriela, as if she never existed. The long walks they would take. The pizza places they would go to. The crowded buses they rode. The busy city filled with car honking. Their friendship. I'm sorry for commenting so much, it's just what this pretty song reminded me of.
