Strange is the hate. This was way before Elton John had hit the big time. You all act as if Nick Drake is a religion and covering his music is sacrilegious. Get a friggin grip.

I mean, I guess it's catchy and he had some emotion in it, but it's way too uptempo.

A few years ago, I believe I was on hear trashing this cover, but now I rather enjoy it. I think there is something appealing in the contrast of Sir Elton's upbeat arrangement and Nick Drake's dark lyrics and somber melody--a compelling 'counterpoint' is created, and the result sounds almost menacing. But hey, that's just me (at this point anyway).

Here's one of the greatest songwriters of all time doing a Nick Drake song. So you don't like the way he did it...bfd. I'm not crazy about ND's version of Dylan's songs. And someone mentioned EJ didn't do dark & depressing... listen to Empty Sky.

Problem is a lot of Nick's songs are dark and depressing, as was he. Elton's music is the exact opposite. Just doesn't work. Good job, good effort.

I tried to give Elton the benefit, but he'd made it all funky and soulless and of course,i made sure this terrible version wasn't still playing as I commented.

If I heard this and hadn't been familiar with Nick Drake's original, this cover would have still stood out in any crowd in my opinion, and that is the mark of a good song! It hasn't got the melancholic undertones of Nick's original (possibly because he knew he'd sound shite if he tried to emulate it) but EJ provides it with enough passion as to give it it's own legs to stand upon. Who knows...if he had lived maybe Nick might have become a big a twat as Elton. I like to think not...

I suspect this was Elton John earning a living and paying bills. In there own ways, both artists are/were unique. Nick Drake was magnificent and is my all time favourite artist but please listen with open ears and minds to songs such as First Episode at Hienton, Levon, Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters, and Ticking and entertain the wild notion that, at times, there may have been a depth to some of Elton Johns output and that maybe it wasnt all drugs and Haagen Daaz.

At least he's made it his own, which is the whole point of covering a song

i really like this...because elton's voice has the highest range here and he is doing his 1969 empty sky style..no it's not nick drake melacholy- --but it doesnt suck....if he sang it today--it would really suck.
