The original may very well have been a guitar. The CS-80 was not yet available when New World Record was released.

That's a Yamaha CS-80 synthesizer that Richard Tandy is playing at that point. It's very expressive. It has a keyboard that can add vibrato (etc.) via changes in pressure. It also has a ribbon controller to slide the pitch.

This video brings back memories of seeing ELO on this tour in Knoxville, Tennessee, amazingly enough. I was 14 years old and had just started high school and had just bought the "Out of the Blue" album. When I heard "Tightrope", "Rockaria", and other songs not on the "Out of the Blue" album at the show, I knew I needed to buy their earlier albums. "Tightrope", "Rockaria", and "Living Thing", among others, make "A New World Record" the best ELO album extant, at least IMHO. Thanks for posting.
