This is a song by Peggy Lee and the Benny Goodman orchestra, recorded in the 1940s.

ELMER'S TUNE

Glenn Miller

- words and music by Elmer Albrecht, Sammy Gallop and Dick Jurgens

Why are the stars always winkin' and blinkin' above?

What makes a fellow start thinkin' of fallin' in love?

It's not the season, the reason is plain as the moon

It's just Elmer's Tune

What makes a lady of eighty go out on the loose?

Why does a gander meander in search of a goose?

What puts the kick in a chicken, the magic in June?

It's just Elmer's Tune

Listen

Listen

There's a lot you're liable to be missin'

Sing it

Swing it

Any old way and any old time

The hurdy-gurdies, the birdies, the cop on the beat

The candy maker, the baker, the man on the street

The city charmer, the farmer, the man in the moon

All sing Elmer's Tune

I just read that this was her first recording session and she was terribly nervous. Sure doesn't show it!

Holy cat, I sang this in a dream last night! In my own arrangement with a big band. :) It's a tune I've known since 14 or so.

i was so very excited to be able to hear some of my cousin sammy gallops music on youtube as i never got the previledge of spending time with him myself like my grandfather did....my grandfather Joseph Gallop was his uncle and the subject of another song he wrote called "Joey's Song"

The Dick Jurgens Orchestra did record it both as an instrumental and later with lyrics, which is the recording heard here. The lyrics were written by Sammy Gallop after which time, Glenn Miller recorded the number featuring Ray Eberle & The Modernaires. The Dick Jurgens Orchestra and The Glenn Miller Orchestra recordings each sold over a million copies and stayed on the Hit Parade for seventeen consecutive weeks. From THE BIG BAND SONG BOOK with notes by George T. Simon copyright 1975

he made a deal with The Aragon Ballroom owner, who then let him practice there every day or so. The Great Big Band Orchestra Leader and Composer, Dick Jurgens, would often hear Elmer practicing this melody and one day decided to help him finish his song, which he did.

ELMER'S TUNE ~ Dick Jurgens & his Orchestra ~ 1941 ~ Okeh Records. As the story goes, ELMER'S TUNE, was named after it's creator, Elmer Albrecht, an undertaker's assistant, who used to practice his song on the piano at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois. I'm 13 years old and I'm practically the only one in my school that listens to this kind of music. It's catchy!!!

Is that Gene Kruper on drums? I just love his slightly off beat single shots. And of course I delight in Peggy Lee's singing .... Al.

True creativity (with a little whimsy) in the lyrics.
