Ellie Greenwich passed away today, August 26, 2009 at the age of 68. This song written by Mark Barkan and Ben Raleigh, and this is a 78 rpm acetate demo from about 1963 that Ellie sang on (as she often did sing on demos for a lot of writers).. The tune was later recorded by the LeVons for the Columbia record label but in my opinion this demo version is much better. I got to speak to Ellie a couple of months back about this demo recording and she was delighted to have a copy of it (the copy I sent her was much cleaner than the audio found in this video, which is deliberately low quality so that it doesn't get bootlegged -- I was hoping Ellie was going to do something with it and her other early demo recordings someday but now that isn't likely going to happen). RIP Ellie, we will all miss you and we thank you for all of the wonderful music you've helped make a part of our lives. God bless you.

i like your post and your tribute to ellie greenwich long time overdue, but then again how this country treats its own has always been a sad tale how it treated the british is another story all together seems there was a need to prevent our own home grown talent from ever succeeding and why seems to have to do with identity, thank you ellie greenwich

@symbolistdevin I found it on ebay along with a bunch of other demo acetate recordings the same seller was selling, from the 50s through the early 70s, though this was the only one I won that was of Ellie, and I didnt even know that until posting it online and having people tell me it was her....

@retrotvluver If someone can get me in touch with Ellie's family to get approval from them first, I can make that happen. The actual disc is not as noisy sounding as the video is (which was deliberate to prevent bootlegging, although that still happened anyway).

Someone should release a clean-sounding version of this great song on a future Ellie CD.

Oh, I love this! She is among the toppermost of the poppermost where it comes to songwriting! Maybe you can ask her family if you can borrow her acetates to post on youtube as a memorial. It would be a lovely thing to do!

She apparently did tons of them for Mark Barkan and Ben Raleigh, who wrote this song. i wish more of them still existed today....

This is great, and quite impressive considering it's simply a writer's demo. Eliie apparently did a lot of these demonstration sessions. It was easier for the writers to shop a singer/producer when the demo was finished and it was easier for the artists to commit the song to memory if they could hear it.

So sorry to hear about Ellie's passing. She was a gifted songwriter -- one of the giants from the famed Brill Building team -- & was married for a time to her songwriting partner, Jeff Barry.
