you both are right... i did a bit of research on this a few years ago. The Einherjar are the bravest men that died in battles, bearing the Valknutr (sign of Odin). These slain men would then be chosen by the valkeries into The Great Hall (Valhalla; greek equivalent would be the Elyssian Fields) where they would fight the whole day, and at night feast and be miraculously healed. These einherjar were chosen by Odin to aid him in the war againt the minions of muspell when Ragnarok arrived.
