Track 7. 'Earth Shanty'. From the album 'Hogwash'.

Written by Tony McPhee

Tony McPhee - Guitar

Pete Cruickshank - Bass

Clive Brooks - Drums

Martin Rushton - Engineer

♪♫ Skyward fly the Eagles as the Hawks search out their prey,

Seaward fly the seagulls.catching fish beneath the spray,

For their young amongst the shingle to feed them for the day,

Look back on this and linger seeking thoughts of yesterday.

I recall all the scenes, forgotten dreams of pastures green,

Grey, clouds all day provide a screen,

From the sun that parched the land and robbed the sea.

Left the dried-up,burnt-out sand.

And the Moon. mirror of the Sun, night-light of the World,

Drags a blanket of cooling sea across the sand in furls,

In the night when the stars provide a reason for Man to strive,

He reasons that's the reason He's alive.

Let the Stars in the Firmament remain as bait,

For the people whose only wish is to leave their home, let them wait,

Their impatience is only matched by a misunderstanding of their fate,

Let them get their priorities straight ♪♫

Great Stuff! I always thought McPhee got better when he moved further away from his roots (the Blues), particularly when he used the Mighty Mellotron.

Great song. I've liked the Groundhogs for a few years but just discovered this today and realized Pavement generally rips off the ending melody in their song "Platform Blues." SM has noted the Groundhogs were an in influence, so makes sense.

Superb Track , love this album Hogwash!! Great Acoustic playing , so Sad he's had a Stroke and can't play anymore:(

This track provides very strong evidence that the further McPhee went from his 'natural' blues roots, the better he got. An incredible track, that competes with Genesis' "Watcher of the Skies" (on the "Genesis - Live" album) for the best Mellotron intro of all time.

They're the ones I recently got for my 16th birthday on vinyl :D. I have to agree that they're no doubt the most excellent groundhogs albums I've ever heard.

Perhaps they are all good. But Hogwash in my life was a very potent piece of music and it accompanied a deep shift in my whole paradigm of existence. This song actually came to me during a "Vision Quest". Yeah I know, what was this song doing in a Native American spiritual ceremony, but when the Creator came to me He also gave me my Indian name"Five Eagles", and set me about on a path that has been hard but I follow God now because He gave me this song as a Totem. It has power- the mellotron!

I would agree with that Karen. "Who Will Save the World? The Mighty Groundhogs" deserves a mention too. These four albums were all made in the 2 and a half year period from '70 - '72, and what a generally marvellous musical time that was too ☼ ;-j

Hogwash, Split and Thank Christ are probably their best albums I'd say
