A somewhat higher-quality version of this clip is on youtube now under the title "1930 - Duke Ellington - Check & Double Check (excerpt)". The transition from 1920s hot jazz to 1930s swing was underway...Ellington led the way by using string bass instead of tuba, but Fred Guy, who would later switch to guitar, was still playing banjo at this point.

The racism back then was so hilarious. But the music was great!

Was Duke Ellington at close up sped up on purpose?

They put body make-up on Juan Tizon (valve trombone) because he wasn't "really" black but they had to make him "blend in."
