he wrote it cause not every band writes their songs with the crowd in mind. in this case, townshend hated this song because roger loved it. he liked it at first because it wasnt a hit and the weho performed it anyway, showing that they werent selling out, but eventually grew to hate it becuase roger was always showing off on stage
