Why can't we just respect RATM and Downset?

Look you can not like Downset all you want. Older stuff is more underground, hardcore sounding and harder than POST hardcore RATM. Key phrase: POST HARDCORE. That means coming AFTER hardcore. RATM rode the pop metal thing. Maybe their sound transcended that (it did) but that's essentially what they became. Downset was playing hardcore shows in the 80's, as some posters said. Downset was THE first act to truly cross any remotely punk and hip-hop on the west coast (you could argue Madball had some of that on the east coast, maybe Biohazard too, but not to the same degree). Downset was influential. Its unfortunate that crap like Korn and Limp Bizkit had to turn the genre to crap. However Downset, all across the country, still gets respect when they tour as a hardcore band. I've seen them many, many times on the east coast and they are definitely hardcore shows. (and if you don't think there is a difference, you are an idiot). Zach de la Rocha is from western Massachusetts folks. He was in a decent band there called Inside Out. Pretty much a straight h/c punk band. Nothing political about it. He moved to LA, met Tom Morello and HEARD DOWNSET. Suddenly he was a rapper and knew all kinds of S*** about politics. The dude is a clown. Mind you, I like most everything Zach has done. I DESPERATELY wish the dude would put out the rap album he's been talking about for 15 years. But see him for what he is. Most of the causes he's taken up politically he knew very, very little about. I can respect that he brought attention to some things, but that's limited. When you open your trap about important things, you should have a clue about what comes out. RATM bit off Downset. It's just a fact. You can still like RATM more, or not like Downset at all. It's ok. Welcome to America where you can like anything you want. But what you like does not change reality.

For the record, Downset has not been around longer than Rage Against the Machine. RATM started in 1991, while Downset didn't come around until 1994.

Proud to say I rocked it with Rey in the pit and his dance-pit style. Total old school. You just had to be there back then.

Anyone live in Sherman Oaks, CA? Go to the Gelson's market on Van Nuys Blvd. Ray works there as a bagger, strictly for the benefits while collecting royalties from downset.
