Here is a sad ballad with a death by triple means: poison, stabbing, & drowning. It is overkill, though it is lovely. This is "Down In The Willow Garden" from Tim O'Brien's cd, "The Crossing." It is done as an Appalachian mountain ballad though it comes originally from Ireland. It wasn't a well known ballad and ended up in a region of West Virginia only. Old Timers think that an Irish peddler came through the area and taught the song. It has similarities with other ballads from Ireland (The Wexford Girl being one), and is played to the tune of "Rosin the Bow" in 3/4 time. (I read this. I am NOT a musician. If there are any arguments to this, please let me know!) This is also known as "Rose Connolly" and "Rose Conelly". It is thought she was of lower station than the boy, and the father thought he could get his son off if he murdered his pregnant lover. Money doesn't buy everything all the time. Enjoy! Tim O'Brien - Down In The Willow Garden lyrics, Traditional:

(from http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/t/tim_obrien/down_in_the_willow_garden.html)

Down in the willow garden

Where me and my true love did meet

It was there we went a courting

My love fell off to sleep

I had a bottle of burgundy wine

My true love she did not know

It was there I murdered that dear little girl

Down on the banks below

I drew my saber through her

It was a bloody knife

I threw her into the river

It was an awful sight

My father often told me

That money would set me free

If I'd but murder that dear little girl

Who's name was Rose Connely

Now he stands at his cabin door

Wiping his tear dimmed eye

Gazing on his own dear son

Upon the gallows high

My race is run beneath the sun

The devil is waiting for me

For I did murder that dear little girl

Who's name was Rose Connely

I am so very sorry that I didn't get this comment answered. They send my comments & anything related to utube to an email that I don't even have. I don't know how to find out how to change it like it used to be. Blessings to you for your kindnesses and your love of others. Thank you for your comment on the music also. I need all the help in my life I can get. God has blessed me, but sometimes it is difficult anyway. I appreciate your comment. My best to you & those in your area, Moppet

Yes. Many ballads do not end well. The sad thing in this song (for me) is that I think he truly loved Rose, but was trying to obey his father. He says nothing bad about her and calls her "dear little girl" and "my true love". His dad wanted money in the family...or I should say, MORE money in the family and poor Rose didn't have it. Thanks so much for your New Year's greetings.I got my flu shot this year, but have ended up with a monster cold. Happy New Year to you & yours also! Welcome 2013!

Such a beautiful tune for such a dark song, often the way in folk music. Happy New Year Moppet.

cont.... I am praying for a better year. I've been ill since mid 2011 and am finally getting out of it! I do hope we NEVER have another year of murder and horror like this year. It is especially hard sense there was no purpose whatsoever. Please take care of yourself. (I lost 2 years over Elmer & Joe Simon). They were friends, went to my church & 7th grade dance "boyfriend".Their mother was found guilty. There is no way that kind woman did it! That was beyond sad.Blessings to your area & to you!

I am so very sorry for you. When I was in high school we lost a family in a car wreck, except for the girl my age. There were 3 children, the youngest being 2, & the parents. It was horrible. (Two boys from my school were murdered in 1968 also. They were both dear friends.) I am having trouble with Newtown. I cannot imagine the sadness & horror in your area. I send my support, prayers, and love to all in your area. This song at least has beauty. There was NO beauty or sense in your tragedy. ....

Thank You for this very dark song...It came to me in a very dark time of my life. I was born and raised in Connecticut just a few miles from Newtown.,,The song saddens me because there are children who are no longer with us that will never know the joys of Love. Happy New Year....Let us all pray that we do not have another year of senseless murders....Duke
