@raybrkly654 You said it !! Her singing always goes straight to the heart .... she's one of the best at interpreting a song. She's quite a lady !! So happy you enjoyed !

Regarding the original, Doris with the band decided on her song interpretations. The issue here is not the song being arranged upbeat but her interpretation of the mood and lyric. For the 1964 version she recast the song with an undercurrent of slyness and found more in the chords. One reason among many Les Brown liked her is her singing approach was so direct, which was typical of her whole persona.

@waynebrasler Do you mean the version she recorded in 1964 ? I've read she thought she didn't do it justice in the 40's recording. But, don't you think Les Brown had the say on how the song would be ? I'm sure he made the decision as to it being an upbeat - energetic version.

Doris rerecorded this because she felt in the original she had missed subtleties in the chord progression that make the song more than a chirpy, saucy number. If you listen to the rerecording for the "Doris Day's Sentimental Journey" album you'll hear the difference. It's not that the original isn't terrific--she does so much with the song--it's just that the second version has an element of wisdom to it.

@ZionHillFarm I'm with you .. I like this version better than the later one. She said she didn't think she did the song justice and did it again ... but I think she did a terrific version here. She definitely had a true gifit .. thank goodness she started singing .. she wanted to be a dancer but was injured in a car-train wreck. thank you ... so happy you enjoyed !

The other answer is right, bobby pins, curlers but also cloth strips & hot irons. My mother used all of the above to curl her's because they were straight as a board.

Gee - I never really thought about that before. I have no idea how they curled their hair in the 40's. That would be interesting. If you find out - let me know. Very Interesting !
