Jabberwocky is from the 1971 double album "HMS Donovan". It is a children's album (mostly) with poems and traditional tales put to music by Donovan. He made it when his girlfriend Linda Lawrence was pregnant with their first child. The result was marvellous. Although not a commercial success it ranks in my opinion amongst Donovan's best work. Although he made the album for children - containing some of the best children songs I have ever heard - adults will also enjoy them. Interestingly the melody to Jabberwocky was taken by Donovan from his song Celtic Rock featuring on his 1970 album "Open Road". Celtic Rock is justly famous as the earliest example of celtic rock music. Here too Donovan was a pioneer!

@SableArradia: I suggest Principal Edwards Magic Theatre's verion of Shakespeare's "Third Sonnet To Sundry Notes Of Music". It is on their album "Soundtrack" but you can buy the single track in MP3. Also, Loreena McKennitt does a nice version of the Alfred Noyes poem "The Highwayman" but she leaves out a few stanzas.

For those wanting more...try Donovan's take on Shakespeare's "Under the Greenwood Tree" (from As You Like It). Currently, there is a You Tube posting of the song. I tried to paste the URL here, but the "Comment Police" shot me a red "Oops!" flag.

Bob Dylan - "I was so much older then" has some poetic moments. Bert Jansch and The Pentangle covered a number of folk ballads that have a poetic quality. The Doors - Jim Morrison experimented with free-form poetry on songs like Texas Radio and the Big Beat. Dylan Thomas - Under Milk Wood. Though not technically musical, it has some songs in it. (original radio version, not the crap with Bonnie Tyler from the 80's) Liam Clancy covered a number of traditional Irish ballads.
