I love the song, and many artists have done it great justice. There are many “coverages” of “Crying,” but the best one, and I’m including Orbison’s version, is by Don McLean. I don’t know exactly what it is in his voice, but he “sells” the song the best. And of all the different times he has sung it, McLeans best version is this one. I’ve heard him sing it many times in concert, and although he always does a good job, this recording here is his best version.

On this day in 1981 {May 30th} Don McLean performed his covered version of Roy Orbison's "Crying"* on the Dick Clark ABC-TV network Saturday-afternoon program 'American Bandstand'...The song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart on January 18th, 1981 at position #37; eight weeks later it would peak at #5 {for 3 weeks} and it spent 18 weeks on the Top 100...And on March 8th, 1981 it peaked at #2 {for 4 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, and for the 4 weeks it was at #2, the #1 record for those four weeks was "What Kind Of Fool" by Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb...Between 1971 and 1981 he had nine records on the Hot Top 100 chart; two made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "American Pie" for 4 weeks on January 9th, 1972...
