When you denote power it should be indicative of control, which she lacks to some degree from her lower to higher resonance. It is also embodies pitch & tonality which commands a certain strength, as well as interpretation. Her power is merely in loudness; however, she can take it there, but lacks so many other qualities of an exceptional voice that it has a yelling effect. She is predominantly applauded & embraced in & by the black community & a more narrow audience, but she has really never been an icon in other circles. She does have a good feel good classic R&B sound & that’s why I do like some of her work. Yet her voice is not more powerful than the other singers you mentioned, nor is she on their level. Diana has strong voice & nor is Patti on her level. That is why she can’t cross over. Patti is overrated. Maria Callas has a powerful voice. Minnie Ripperton has a powerful voice. Yet, comprehensive!

It's amazing how much was made of Diana passing the mic to Patti, as she clearly does. At the time the headline was "Patti steals mic from Diana and upstages her" ... This is actually a good cover of this song with Diana starting slow and Patti taking it to the rafters... All the drama surrounding this in hindsight was very silly

I understand that Diana's voice is not what is considered the conventional ~norm for black female singers but I adore the ethereal, peaceful sound of her. And sometimes you don't have to yell and shout to get your point across with a song. And I adore listening to Patti as well. Whatever feud they had is old news and I feel like we should be the same way.

i f i were patti labelle i would probably be critical of miss ross too if cindy birdsong left me to join diana ross and become a supreme and i would also be critical of miss ross because of all the professional sucess miss ross has acheived compared to patti labelle ..

It's so obvious that Pattie was just showing off that night. Ok, she has a strong voice, much stronger than Diana's or maybe than Aretha's or Whitney's, but why all this showing off? In fact, it doesn't sound good at all. Noone could reach Diana's class and elegance.
