Damian, you're right, the song is based on a poem called Bitter Fruit. However, neither Diana nor Billie Holiday "f***ed up", as you so tastefully put it. The song's lyrics were changed to say "southern breeze"- arrangers have a right to alter poems when they write lyrics, as long as credit's given where it's due. There was enough blind hatred between people in the day of lynching. Don't resurrect it with comment enmity.

I disagree. Diana was one of the most expressive and versatile singers we've ever experienced. Billie's souful singing strips the pleasure from the experience making the listening experience grating and unsmooth.

Billy sang it with feeling. Diana made it sound like a pop song and it had no feeling at all. Billy really did experienced real prejudice in her life time which is why she had so much feeling in her version and suggested reverence for the subject by not allowing the audience to applaud after her performance. Diana has had a pampered life and has no idea about this kind of prejudice, in my humble opinion. Hated it!
