Nel 1972, Diana Ross riceve una nomination agli Academy Awards-OSCAR ed una ai NYFCC Awards, nella categoria "miglior attrice protagonista" per il ruolo di Billie Holiday nel film "La Signora del Blues ". Inoltre, concorre , ma fuori gara, anche al Festival del Cinema di Cannes . Vince il Golden Globe (premio assegnato dai critici stranieri accreditati ad Hollywood) come miglior Attrice protagonista. Sempre nel 1973, in Giappone il film batte tutti i record d'incassi. A seguito di questo grande successo unito a quello musicale ( Diana Ross è sempre stata molto amata in Giappone ), la Ross diviene la prima artista, nella storia del Giappone, ad essere invitata a Palazzo Imperiale per una udienza privata con l'Imperatrice Nagako, moglie dell'imperatore Hiroito). Il giorno seguente, viene chiamata dall'erede al trono, il Principe Akihitoe da sua moglie, la Principessa Michiko nella loro residenza privata .Dal punto di vista musicale, " Lady Sings the Blues" raggiunge immediatamente il 1º posto della Billboard Hot 100 e vende, in solo otto giorni, 300.000 copie e, in totale, solo negli USA, vende oltre 2 milioni di copie e rimane in classifica per ben 54 settimane. Diana Ross, diviene così la prima cantante pop a portare al 1º posto delle classifiche USA un album di blues e jazz .Nel Regno Unito, arriva solo al 50º posto della classifica ma diviene, comunque, disco d'oro .

I like Billie Holiday, but if you don't think Diana Ross' career hasn't dwarfed Holiday's than you're delusional. There are few female entertainers that have had the career Diana has had, and Billie Holiday isn't one of them. sorry

@Eamonn20a a mind is like a parachute it only works if it's open & you's isn't. Holiday was a strung out drug addict who died broke. that's her legend. Ross is an international superstar with success across diverse mediums. Unlike Holiday she has hundreds of millions in her bank account & is currently selling out all over the world on her tour. Holiday didn't accomplish 1/10 of what Ross did and will continue to do until she not drugs decide she's had enough. bye to that. bozo.

@Eamonn20a Like Ross isn't a legend? she's a living legend whose career dwarfed Holidays by miles. holiday was a one dimensional jazz singer. Ross greatest challenge in playing her was not to overshadow her with her own super aura and charisma.

it's not that easy being...Billie Holiday!... Billie Holiday was a genius and she was 30 years ahead of her times. Musicians say that Billie Holiday is not the greatest singer. She is the only one!! Diana Ross gave her best for the role. But I think that this role was not a good choice for her. She is very sweet. Billie was a heart-breaking and plangent voice and she had a dramatic presence!
