This version of Smart Patrol by Devo is probably the best one I've ever heard. It's from one of their earliest demo sessions from possibly February or March 1974.

Smart Patrol aka 'The Anthem Of The Career Prostitute'. Soup deJour = Semen of the night's highest-paying john. Prophylactic Tour= the various johns she's with per night.

in 1974 they did it all already... so it seems the lates 70's and 80's were just rehearsals. All was already there since the beginning.

Where did you get the audio for this?

Sounds like Daniel Johnston covering Kraftwerk.

No because there is an actual guitarist and drummer in the band. Devo was in the strange area between New Wave and Punk . Very hard to categorize much like The Talking Heads.

Also, this song's origins trace back to Jerry going "Okay, you're a smart prole, nowhere to go" to an audience member at a very early show. The same concert is also the one where "Lt. Casanova" was played, whose elements can be heard on this song... That concert must have been from April. Geez, I could write an entire essay on just "Smart Patrol".

March? They had only played one show at that point, and that was in 1973! I messed up as well... I read somewhere that this is from MAY of 1974, and I said April.

One of Lt. Casanova's guitar lines and the constant rising synth notes were applied to this song. Listen closely and you'll notice that the guitar line played between each verse and just before the chorus is nearly identical to the one played in Casanova between the spoken word section and the "naugahyde" bridge.

Could Devo be classified as "Acid Techno?"
