Actually they do not. A vocoder sounds more robotic. Autotune is based off of the work of Roger Troutman, which was the sound box. A sound box requires an artist to be able to sing notes. That is why most artists today do not use the sound box, plus, more than likely they do not know how to use it. Hence, compare (e.g.,California Love, I Want To Be Your Man by Zapp) vs T-Pain, who uses the Vocoder, you will be able to hear the distinct difference between them. Peace!
