Thanks for your response to my rantings about great International Soul Music being hijacked by northerners who think they discovered it. I reiterate we were bopping to this stuff since the early 60's so it's not 'NORTHERN'. I respect your opinion and accept how some people get dragged into the supposed 'Northern Soul' genre because they've trawled the international music scene and unilaterally declared the best stuff as 'NRTHERN Soul' which I maintain is some peoples vivid imagination that they have some kind of right to call it related to the North of England. So, if a group of people 'collect' a particular style of music - that gives them some right to call it their own genre? As I've said all along, Northern Soul is a figment. Some of what has been hijacked and suggested as being Northern Soul is stuff I used to bop to in the early to mid 60s - like The Nitty Gritty and Soul Time by Shirley Ellis. way before the northerners even heard of her. Thanks David, yes I respect most viewpoints but get uptight when desperate people attempt to create Music categories by trawling old pop, soul and funk and then relabeling it as Northern Soul, as though they're the first to hear the vast collection they've amassed since the late 60's. We heard many of these songs and were rocking (Madison, Slop, Watusi, (and, dare I say it - 'twisting'?) and bobbing to them before most of the audience for this stuff were borne. It has absolutely nothing to do with the North, it's just that dance halls across the country (and maybe the planet) were dancing to some of the stuff they try to suggest has some relation to the North of England. I'm not racist to any section of the British public and since the 60s have been a Leeds United fan. So let's get real = Northern Soul is a figment of some people's hopes and wild imagination? Cheers! Quite sad really that Northerners have to re-designate American Soul and funk soul as 'Northern', when us Londoners were rocking to it since the early 60's. Jumping on the bandwagon late really! Mick C. (aging Mod)

HI MICK, NICE TO SEE YOU ARE STILL COLLECTING. ONCE A SOUL MAN ALWAYS A SOUL MAN. I GREW UP IN THE NORTH IN THE 60S AND AT THAT TIME WE JUST CALLED IT SOUL OR R&B. IT WAS ACTUALLY DAVE GODIN A SOUTHERNER WHO COINED THE TERM NORTHERN SOUL IN THE LATE 60S. HE WAS A DJ / RECORD SHOP OWNER IN LONDON WHO NOTICED THE TYPE OF RECORDS KIDS DOWN FROM THE NORTH TO WATCH FOOTBALL WERE BUYING AND CAME UP TO CHECK OUT THE SCENE. I BELIEVE HE WENT THE TWISTED WHEEL IN MANCHESTER AND HIGHLAND ROOM AT BLACKPOOL THEN WROTE ABOUT IT IN BLUES SOUL MAGAZINE. IN THE SEVENTIES THE NAME JUST STUCK. INTERESTINGLY MANY OF THE RECORDS PLAYED ON THE NORTHERN SCENE WERE RECORDED IN THE SOUTHERN STATES AND WERE OFTEN REFERRED TO AS SOUTHERN SOUL. IT'S ALL GOOD ANYWAY.BTW TONY TOP TUNE. Thanks for the frank confirmation of my thoughts on the North hijacking SOUL/FUNK/BLUES music and rechristening it as though it has some unique geographical relation to the north of England. Bizarre! I grew up in south London in the 50's and 60s an most of the funky music that's been purloined by the north is somewhat arrogant. Possibly 'cos I think we 'grooved' just as well as northerners - probably better??? I'm approaching 70 now but still collect stuff from that era but I'm also occasionally pleased when I hear the very occasional stuff that makes me want to dance. Some Martin Solveig, Rob Thomas, CeeLo Green and Robin Thicke stuff hits the spot. Pity I can't get the modern stuff on vinyl so it could be played on my Juke box. Good luck with the DIY & decorating. Mick C.

'Northern Soul' is a figment! It seems to be most funk/soul from any country and from any/all eras. So why do Northerners pretend it has some relevance to their part of the UK. It's all good funk soul and has no ownership by Northerners, Southerners, Brits, Ozzies, Yanks. It is a treasure for us all to enjoy. Mick C (A Southerner)
