WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HELL

(C) Dave Hill/Steve Watts (1989) Hello - Steve Watts here -

"New Worlds Hell" is the original title of the big opening track I composed for side two of "Taking The World By Storm". Originally inspired by Dante's "Inferno", Dave Hills' lyrics present a personal view of modern life - as a modern vision of Hell.

This vision is represented by the "musique concrete" intro. A collage of samples, sound f/x and phobias, including seaside resorts (from Dave) and my own loathing of mainstream TV shows and adverts.

Apocalypse Now helicopters; TV Evangelists; quiz shows; sports crowds and Lybian/US aerial dogfights battle it out, while a seaside arcade game plays a manic electronic freak-out based on the main theme from "Remembrance Day". That old scary "Laughing Clown" from Blackpool's Pleasure Beach is mixed with manic laughter from Amazon engineer Keith (Archie) Andrews; from this chaos rises a "satanic choir" borrowed from an electronic track of mine called "Music For Baby-S(h)itters" - don't ask...

The sinister "Have a nice day..." is a bank manager from a Midland Bank advert and at the time (as now), seemed fittingly ironic set alongside a radio ad for Government employment training, as most of us were at the time, in receipt of some form of benefit or other -- ah! -- So much for the Rock Star life-style...

Somewhere in the midst of all this chaos is the sound of me scraping large polystyrene blocks down one of Amazons expensive studio door-frames in the hope of creating a subliminal "fingernails scraping down a blackboard" sound effect (much to everyone's annoyance and the engineers bemusement) -- belated apologies to the cleaners ...

The guitar riff was inspired by German Progressive Rock band "ELOY" - the track "Mighty Echoes" from their 1979 album "Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes". I've been a huge fan of this band since the late '70's, and it was great to meet the bands founder member Frank Bornemann at the official launch party for our next album, "Hold On To The Dream" in 1991, that particular album being previously mixed at Frank's Horus-Sound-Studio in Hanover.

The huge sound of "Hell", comes courtesy of mass multi-tracked guitars from John and Steve; solid driving bass and drums from Nick and Scott; big orchestral arrangements (pure Lloyd-Webber); Dave Hills screaming vocal delivery over descending Gothic string-machines, and the impeccable mixing skills of the then up-and-coming young engineer Mark Phythian, who would later earn himself a Grammy award for Coldplay's "Clocks". Hi Mark!

The song would have made a great live opener, but unfortunately we always avoided it as it was purposely composed for the very top end of Dave's vocal-range, and along with the tricky rhythmic structure; unusual guitar-phrasing and complex middle-section and sound f/x, transposing all this down to a lower key would have been difficult for everyone concerned, and wouldn't have, I think in the end, produced such a strong impact.

I'm really pleased that this song remains such a favourite with Demon fans and it remains one of my all time favourites. Its sheer grandiose-ferocity and weird cavernous production still retain its apocalyptic power. Dave's screaming vocals and disturbing lyrics (especially over that big choir crescendo in the last bridge) to this day make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end...

Turn off the lights -- turn up the volume - and kiss your ass goodbye.

I've uploaded "Mighty Echoes" by Eloy ...

Ps:

There are various stories relating to weird happenings that occurred during the recording of this song, most of which have been previously well documented elsewhere, but an unexpected update...

Whilst writing this piece, my normally rock-solid PC began to continuously and inexplicably shutdown over and over again for absolutely no apparent reason what-so-ever, to the extent, that I had to go out and continue writing this in the local library.

This is situated next to a church and a local Supermarket: perhaps being close to two centres of worship help?

(The PC is now fine by the way.)

NICK BUSHELL: Bass Guitar

STEVE BROOKS: Guitar

SCOTT CRAWFORD: Drums

DAVE HILL: Vocals

JOHN WATERHOUSE: Guitar

STEVE WATTS: Synthesizers and Keyboards
