A touching and a telling story, Clarebannerman. I do believe that the famine years should be given high priority in the schools curriculum, not as a mere historical curiosity, but to show children what happens when partial political interests are placed above the needs and rights of ordinary people. Too many politicians don't seem to have learned the lesson yet. A beautiful song and a style that only Ireland knows how to create.

The parish of Kilrush and the surrounding areas were most grievous strucken during the famine years. A total of over 3,900 people died in the workhouse in Kilrush during the three years 1847-'49 and most of these were carted to a common famine pit in Shanakyle. The evidence can be seen in the graveyard to this day, and no amount of re-writing of Irish history can change these facts.
