The last place I lived (60A Marsh House Lane, Warrington) was run by William David Shaw of Kelrick Properties, worst landlord in the country (UK) - nearly got done for murder over someone else living in that flat in the 90's. Put's his own stepson in the downstairs flat, without doing it up, the oven stunk, the upstairs was a death trap in the event of a fire, he was using illegal coin meters (to be fair, they became illegal in 2010, halfway through our tenancy - though that doesn't alter the fact the downstairs meter could have been altered between tenants), the floorboards were too thin (illegal by law), it had beetles in it, it was boiling hot in summer and freezing cold in winter, there were electric heaters, and he may have been skimming off the meters. And, one night, my neighbour was playing disco till 4 in the morning - maybe his brother was round (who was a company landlord - my neighbour had heard this song). I'm sure he'd have tried doubling the rent if he could get away with it. The landlord's son kept calling himself a landlord's agent even though he should have just used the title Landlord - also according to the Housing Act. And the electric people responsible for the meters were SPARC electricity - Sun Microsystems may have to start issuing disclaimers with their computers. And the landlord's son took forever to fix anything, including serious work like floorboard repair or a mouldy ceiling caused by tiles falling off the roof.
