Days of Wine and Roses (1962) is a film directed by Blake Edwards with a screenplay by JP Miller adapted from his own 1958 Playhouse 90teleplay of the same name.

The movie was produced by Martin Manulis, with music by Henry Mancini, and features Jack Lemmon, Lee Remick, Charles Bickford and Jack Klugman.[1] The film depicts the downward spiral of two average Americans who succumb to alcoholism and attempt to deal with their problem.

An Academy Award went to the film's theme music, composed by Mancini with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The film received four other Oscar nominations, including ones for Best Actor and Best Actress.

Songwriters: MANCINI, HENRY N. / MERCER, JOHNNY

The days of wine and roses,

Laugh and run away,

Like a child at play,

Through a meadowland,

Toward a closing door,

A door marked never more,

That wasn't there before.

The lonely night discloses,

Just a passing breeze,

Filled with memories,

Of the golden smile,

That introduced me to,

The days of wine and roses,

And you!

The lonely night discloses,

Just a passing breeze,

Filled with memories,

Of the golden smile,

That introduced me to,

The days of wine and roses,

And you!

Lee Remick was not only beautiful but she gave a hauntingly brilliant performance, I think even better than the great Piper Laurie! So sad to see her walk away in the final scene.

Such a fantastic film, especially when they showed what it use to be like for those of us that are chemically dependent. It use to be the nut house or the jail house until you dried out. A horrible thought now that we can look back at the era of treatment centers that started in around 1979. I LOVED the AA rep that Jack Klugman played. He was perfect for the part. Also, I loved the end when Jack L. said , sorry I cant let you come back until you get sober and Lee just walks away and the sign flashes of the bar on the corner. It makes me cry to watch it as both my parents were alcoholics and the genes carried on down through the children. Thank God for you, Bill W. and the magnificent spiritual principles you gave us to stay clean, know as the 12 steps of AA.

a fabulous film... a beautiful video. Thank You... speaking as a classical musician but lover of fine cinema... between Lemmon, Remick, Klugman, Bickford, script, direction... breaks my heart whenever I see this. It's about staring in the mirror and at last understanding denial; reckoning with the difference between love and codependence and making difficult choices. Henry's score... wasn't bad either! I never cease to weep at the ending.

Such a beautiful, sad, and moving movie! Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick were remarkable in the movie! And, of course, the music by Henry Mancini was as beautiful as always! Whenever it comes on tv I will watch it!

I've been a piano player for almost 60 years now. When I was young, I saw this movie, and many times down through the years, when no one else was at home, at night I would turn off all the lights, sit down at the piano, and play this song ("The Days Of Wine And Roses"). I've always been such a huge fan of Henry Mancini. Blake Edwards, Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick did such amazing work on this film. I've seen this film many times, and it ALWAYS touches me.

This beautiful and poignant song perfectly complimented the ground breaking movie about alcohol addiction. At the time of its showing the movie going public was shocked that two popular, fast rising and beautiful stars, Jack Lemon and Lee Remick, would take these roles. In time, the film and its leading actors were recognized for their courage, empathy and artistry in a realistic portrayal of true love and tragedy. While many consider Maestro Mancini' s Two For The Road to be his best main / love theme, I think a strong counter could be made for The Days of Wine and Roses as being his best.
