Yes, that is the original classical version. Connie changed it drastically and with much success.

Check out Beniamino Gigli's 1940 78rpm version as "Mamma" here on You Tube ... Quite different to Connie and David! ... I wonder how many copies that one sold?

I'm not sure which was the A-side or B-side for Whitfield's 1955 coupling of "Mama" and "Everywhere" but the latter is listed in 'British Hit Singles' as hitting the No. 3 spot in the UK and staying in the charts there for 20 weeks.

Connie's is considered the definitive version and is the biggest selling version.

The two versions are quite different. Connie really changed the meaning of the song. Prior to Connie's version, the separation wwas by distance. Connie's version implies separation by death. She also slowed down the pace. I also believe that she met with the author of the song whan she intendded to appply the differences, and he was hten a 90 year old man. Connie's version is more dramatic and of course, it is done ppartially in Italian.

Glad you like it. These old songs seem to bring back lots of memories. As a result of your comment, I've just uploaded another Whitfield track, 'Can I Forget You', so I hope you like that one too!

My mum used to go to school with David Whitfield - such a distinctive voice. Obviously this song was played endlessly, i was about 5 then. But she probably gave me my love of music, she was always on the piano too. Strange that as I listen to this I think of my "Mama". Great posting, thank you!

On this day in 1960 {January 3rd} Connie Francis performed "Mama" on the CBS-TV program 'The Ed Sullivan Show'... Eleven months earlier on February 22nd it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #8 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #2 in the U.K. The B-side, "Teddy", reached #17... Five years earlier in 1955 British singer David Whitfield's version peaked at #12 on the U.K. Singles chart... R.I.P. Mr. Whitfield {1925 - 1980} and Mr. Sullivan {1901 - 1974}
