I think it's a great message. We grow up and we have these harmful notions of men not having feelings and always having to fix everything and women having to be submissive and dependent. I do believe protecting one another is a "masculine" quality and nurturing is a "feminine" quality. Truth is, finding those qualities in the opposite sex makes our relationships richer and more authentic.

This song reminds me that separateness is an illusion. Like a wave cannot be separate from the ocean. In the conclusion of this song the boy says he has lost some kindness when he was no longer open (or maybe was shamed into) to being gentle which most of us can be and many men lose something when that is gone.

I disagree with the poster's opening statement in his/her critique (song write-up link) of Ms Williams. From listening to the CDs I have of her, she is rarely, if never, mediocre. And she is often, if not always, brilliant. Her songs are intelligent beyond the norm. She is a wonderful poet of Americana!

To be honest, this song is not my cup of tea but that's just the style, i appreciate that others enjoy it and i'm definitely all for its message. Its a damn shame that everyone just wants to steriotype people instead of just letting them be as they wish.

I love this song and I love Dar Williams. It's so sad how women are told that they have to be protected and wear clothes that are uncomfortable so that they can look attractive and it's so sad that men aren't allowed to cry and talk about their emotions. Makes me want to cry how ignorant people are sometimes. Gender stereotypes suck.

@StradTrumpeter Uh ... if this strikes you as angry, I wonder what you would make of Marianne Faithfull's "Why D'ya Do It?" or Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know" (or, come to think of it, what you make of your own obvious hostility toward a piece that is completely non-threatening and sweet almost to the point of being saccharine).

This song doesn't have to be limited to gay or transgendered people. It is suiting for a lot of children. Children who are allowed to be who they are often blur gender lines until someone makes them fit into the "proper" gender roles My Dad had no sons, so my sister and I helped him tinker. I am 48 & I still refuse to fit the proper gender roles. I cook, bake, sew, repair electronics, shoot a gun, tinker with cars, wear pretty clothes & sweet perfume, and I'm happy being a woman who was a boy.
