Nope. He plays in open G---(D)GDGBD without the low (D) string.

keith ia who inspired me to play in the 1st place. other guitar players can be recognized by their style once they start soloing. all keith has to do is play a chord and you know it's him!!

i have a lot of jazz background in my playing and when i use standard tuning i'm like a fish in the water. i can play those scales so easily and solo very easily. i've been playing that way for so long that i'm a fish OUT of the water when i try. every thing that's recognizable becomes UNrecognizable! they say you can teach an old dog new tricks, but not THIS old dog!! i guess i'm to set in my ways to suddenly change my way of playing after all these years.

i read keith's book "Life" and he wrote that as a child he had some sort of accident where the tip of his right index finger was cut off. to compensate, he would hold the pick a bit tighter than most people and he explained that's why his playing, even when just strumming a chord, was very distinguishable. it's that extra 'attack' he has. you can hear also, the songs where he uses that tuning, things like "tumblin dice" and "honky tonk women." you use that tuning and it locks right in to them.

What I do for scales is buy graph paper and then draw out the guitar neck on the graph paper. Figure out what notes I'm dealing with and then mark it out so I can take a look at the scale all the way up the neck. It helps immensely. For like $2 or less you can greatly expand your range regardless of tuning.

i've tried that tuning and i can play some open chord things, but as far as leads, i'm totally lost!

The thing that really gives Keef that voice is that he uses a different guitar tuning. Instead of EADGBe he uses DADGAd. It gives his tone more low end right up front. But I totally agree. Keith is a one of kind guitarist.

there are alot of great guitar players you can identify once they start soloing but with keith, all he has to do is play a chord and you know it's him!! i remember the 1st time i heard brown sugar, jumpin jack flash, tumblin dice, honky tonk woman, start me up etc. even before the 1st verse came in i knew it was the stones because i knew that the guitar chord was played by keith!! was, is, and always will be the man!!

@oclero i have every album the stones ever made. that is DEFINATELY keith on guitar!! mick's playing is extremely melodic..even when he plays the blues keith is just plain nasty! i've heard these exact same licks on many albums before mick joined the band and again after he left. it's keith!!
