Song: The Two Magicians

--

The lady sits at her own front door

As straight as a willow wand

And by there come a lusty smith

With his hammer in his hand

Saying bide lady bide

For there's a nowhere you can hide

For the lusty smith will be your love

And he will lay your pride.

Why do you sit there lady fair

All in your robes of red

I'll come back tomorrow

And have you in me bed

Saying. . .

Away away you coal black smith

Would you do me this wrong

For to have me maiden head

That I have kept so long

I'd rather I was dead and cold

And me body in the grave

Than a lusty, dusty, coal black smith

Me maiden head should have

Saying. . .

So the lady, she curled up her hand

And swore upon the mold

That he'd not have her maiden head

For all of a pot of gold.

But the blacksmith he curled up his hand

And swore upon the mast

That he would have her maiden head

For the half of that or less

Saying. . .

So the lady she turned into a dove

And flew up in the air

But he became an old cock pigeon

And they flew pair and pair

So the lady she turned into a mare

As dark as night was black

But he became a golden saddle

And climbed upon to her back

Saying . . .

So the lady she turned into a hare

And ran all over the plane

But he became a greyhound dog

And ran her down again

So the lady she turned into a fly

And fluttered in the air

But he became a hairy spider

And dragged her in his lair

Saying. . .

So the lady she turned into a sheep

Grazing upon the common

But he became a horny ram

And soon he was upon her.

So she turned into a full dress ship

And sailed over the sea

But he became a bold captain

And aboard of her went he

Saying . . .

So the lady she turned into a cloud

Floating in the air

But he became a lightning flash

And zipped right into her

So she turned into a mulberry tree

A mulberry tree in the wood

But he came forth as the morning dew

And sprinkled her where she stood.

Saying. . .

So the lady she ran into the bedroom

And changed into a bed

But he became a green coverlet

And he gained her maidenhead

And once she woke he took her so

And still he bad her bide

For the lusty smith became her love

For all of her mighty pride.

This song isn't about rape like everyone thinks it is. Like many folk songs, it uses exaggeration and symbolism. The Lady isn't actually against being with him, she's saying being coy. "Alright, if you want me so much, let's see how much effort you're willing to put into it."The Smith isn't saying he's ignoring how she feels, he's displaying his confidence, his bravado. He's showing that he knows what he wants and is willing to work for it.And in the end, despite her coyness, she lets him onto her. If she was truly trying to escape him, why go into the bedroom and become a bed. I mean, that's literally inviting him to lay on her.

Many of these lines seem pointlessly awkward to me - the singer ends up having to squeeze extra syllables in where there really isn't room for them. Is it deliberate, for instance, that it's "So the lady she ran into the bedroom", instead of just "her room" or something equally simple? I'd understand it if it were for the sake of a rhyme or something, but it never is.

*sigh. Does no one understand the once upon a time people believed that the fertility of the earth depended on the fertility of humans? And that words and songs were magic...

Quite symbolic of the inner mysteries-Read the book by Paul Huson MASTERING WITCHCRAFT and that should open up some of inner mysteries/inner meanings of old folk songs-In some cases it was our Goddess who initiated the chase-The old ways are NOT the new ways-TEADITIONAL CRAFT IS JUST THAT-TRADITIONAL !!!

After listening to the song and then reading the comments, it gave me one of the greatest laughs in a long time. People saying the song supports "sexual harassment" is just down right stupid for a couple reasons. This song has been around for a long time, its also been done by so many different artists that the original lyrics are kind of hazy. I'm just saying that this song is great but people are looking at it for the totally wrong reason.

this is a love chase ,a midsummer eve thing, it is about persuasion, both have the power to chase or elude one another.Much like the tale of dianna and lucifer bieng the sun and moon.the point bieng one must yield to create life.the people are personifications of nature, not merely individuals.

I myself, being of the female gender, happened to find the song amusing and funny in its own way. Really, it's just a song, it's not real life. People write and or sing songs about killing others and all other nonsense, doesn't mean they actually believe those things are right, or should be done. It's a folk song, not a commandment of "You shall do this, and if she says no, try and sleep with her anyway because she's pretty and you want to". It's a testament to the skill they had in changing shape, like the song Ceridwen and Taliesin, when Gwion is running like crazy trying to get away from Ceridwen, and keeps changing shape. She chooses something that could catch him to change into. Here, the roles are reversed. He is the pursuer, she the pursued. You don't HAVE to like the song's content, or agree with it.

Stop being such a white knight, Ricky. No one gives a shit. Especially not women.

okay seriously, people like Ricky-kitty Sabastion Carter need to chill. harrassment? not quite, and if this song irks you, then avoid Damh's other song "Domeana" "This song makes me cautious of listening to more of Damh's music"- seriously?? you're completely missing the point of the song. the song is called two magicians and recounts two magicians engaged in a "fith-fath" duel to prove their worth. she denies him only because of his being a smith(IE a filthy peasant craftsman) thinking him beneath her without knowing anything about him, and he proceeds to equal her in magic, proving he's more than he seems. this is a common theme in stories of magic from the celtic world(example:Cerridwen and Taliesin) and even made it into the modern era in pop culture like disney's "sword and the stone" which has a fith-fath contest between merlin and mad madame mim.

Dude, you can argue me all day. I did. And you, need to stop leading on that women need a man to make up what they want for them. No, a woman wont just give in by a man chasing her, and even if you say its natural, guess what? Still harassment. Still illegal. Which was my point all along. And guess what else? Nothing you can say will ever change that.

Tell me only one thing, did you report my comment? I am asking because it got deleted. For that reason I will repeat: a man that pursues a woman will get her eventually, sooner or later. Because it is a law of nature to be that way and that is what the song is about. The two wizards keep transforming into different things in nature that are compatible: a spider and a fly, a horse and a saddle, a ship and a sailor and so on (these are also clever sexual innuendos) and finally a man and a woman.

Pretty sure Damh didn't write this. Tales from the Crow Man is a collection of older folk songs, not his own compositions.
