Curve are a classic case, if not THE classic case of the British music press' tendency to build 'em up and knock 'em down. There were journalists calling Curve the future of music after they had only released one E.P.I can see why they went so bananas over these guys when they first came out. They took the best bits of everything that was hot in 1991: they had Ride's guitars, My Bloody Valentine's wall of sound, Happy Monday's beats, and Cocteau Twins' vocals, etc. In other words, they were a music journalist's wet dream.While Curve borrowed elements from other bands, the way they combined them was genuinely innovative and that's what made it forgivable. Take this song. It's basically Happy Mondays meets My Bloody Valentine. Happy Mondays with with Toni on vocals and Kevin Shields on guitar. One of the few examples of Madchester shoegaze. It should be a disaster but it's brilliant.Curve should have gone further than they did.
