I remember an old time banjer player I met once around Townsend, TN named Commie Tipton that played Cumberland Gap in a tuning similar to yours. Hattie Stoneman has a tuning like this. Sure like your version.

What's the year count on that banjo? Looks like one of the older factory made. Squared frets?

It takes a village to tune a banjo. Great tunes.

nice! I use his "shady grove" in that tuning, and sometimes I swap the words for little margaret. I still owe you a cd--great work on your cd by the way. lately I've been decoding the secrets of banjo bill cornett and george landers. landers' "cumberland gap" is fun as hell to play in that up-down picking style.

@vcp430: tuned to fDGCD, Lee plays Cumberland Gap sort of like this, I have never played Little Maggie one could surely use this tuning to play it though.

Is this the same tuning Lee used for his version of Little Maggie? Just curious. He is truly one of the best two finger pickers in Eastern KY. I've always liked his style and he's just a nice person in general. I first heard of him from his uncle Morgan. One of my favorites he recorded was for the Smithson Folkways, and he played Pretty Polly. Now that was some powerful pickin' there, buddy.
