From their album "The Morrigan's Call."

Lyrics:

There was an old woman and she lived in the woods, weile weile waile.

There was an old woman and she lived in the woods, down by the river Saile.

She had a baby three months old, weile weile waile.

She had a baby three months old, down by the river Saile.

She had a pen knife, long and sharp, weile weile waile.

She had a pen knife, long and sharp, down by the river Saile.

She stuck the pen knife in the baby's heart, weile weile waile.

She stuck the pen knife in the baby's heart, down by the river Saile.

There were three loud knocks come a'knocking on the door, weile weile waile.

There were three loud knocks come a'knocking on the door, down by the river

Saile.

There were two policemen and a special-branchman, weile weile waile.

There were two policemen and a special-branchman, down by the river Saile.

They put a rope around her neck, weile weile waile.

They put a rope around her neck, down by the river Saile.

They pulled the rope and she got hung, weile weile waile.

They pulled the rope and she got hung, down by the river Saile.

And that was the end of the woman in the woods, weile weile waile.

And that was the end of the baby too, down by the river Saile.

Has this song anything to do with the fairy tale "The Old Woman in the Wood" by the Brothers Grimm?

Listen to the Dubliners' version, they're more authentic.

Getting older as a wee lass, you start to actually pay attention to the lyrics and your draw drops.

I just don't think this tune is meant to be played that heavy and that fast.

@ZombieHippie91 interesting connection. i wouldnt call it a remake of childs, but inspired by. while the general structure is very familiar, as well as the matricide aspect, all of childs versions deal with the woman meeting the ghosts of the children.

It's also a children's song. We used to sing it when we were kids. (sans the death metal attitude tho :) )

@ALPHBTH Actually, This song was written by a Celt. Francis James Child. Who wrote 13 different versions of this song, all including killing children in other ways, including the pen knife, like in this song, drowning, live burial, strangulation, etc. It was originally called "The Cruel Mother" And was based around the river Saile. Which Means Filthy, or unclean in Gaelic. And, getting to the basis of my reply, "weile, weile waile" means "For as well" in Gaelic.

I'm new to this genre. Cruachan is my favourite so far. Can anyone suggest a few other bands/songs I should listen to?

@rastafarian1307 This is just the version I've always sung. I haven't actually heard any version bar this one a month ago. One of those childhood songs, you know.

@LooserLover Not quite m8,because I've got The Dubliners Greatest hits CD on which the lyrics goes right as it written up in the "Show more" menu. And then again I've heard the version that u were sayin' and looks alike that they were singin it depending on the mood as they were. :-) Or depending on whiskey or ale..
