My own political leanings to not easily lend themselves to stereotypes. I generally vote Republican because I oppose legal abortion, but I am a pacifist because I believe that Jesus actually meant it when he said, "Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you."Daniel Berrigan is likewise a man who is not easily stereotyped. In addition to the fact that he was known for protesting Viet Nam, an article at CommonDreams.org says:"He has demonstrated against the death penalty, in support of LGBT rights and against abortion." I tend to disagree with him on the LGBT thing, but I still admire him.

Teresa - On May 1, 1970 "students" threw beer bottles at police cars and broke store windows in downtown Kent. On May 2, "students" torched the ROTC building on the campus. Plenty of violence had already occurred prior to May 4th, which is why the National Guard was there in the first place. I'm not trying to justify what happened on May 4th - it was a tragedy. But without the violence that took place in the days prior, the Guard wouldn't have been there at all.

Hospital Bound asap

On May 4th, 1970 the National Guard, ordered by the Governor of Ohio were told to enter the college grounds of Kent State and stop the protesting of students there. It was a peaceful protest and everyone went running after the first shot was fired. It was a trap that most could not get away from. How could a Governor order such a thing to happen to students who were just protesting something they believed in? They were not violent and some that got killed were not even protesting, they were going to class. The terrible day in Ohio.

Absolutly great song and reminder of one of the crutial events when historic tendency unveils and manifestly looses its innocence, not just far, far abroad. Seems like a crossroad: on the one hand it shows what the spirit of freedom is able to do in arts, (even if it seems to need blood for something like this also), on the other it is not just a reminder but also a sign to what is happening nowadays without a contemporary form of protest-cultur or free journalism, which is inspired to write new songs about whats going on behind the curtains, but shurly its even worse than in Ohio, partly because in Kent-University they wont give a reason for "tin-soldiers" to fire anymore, but become tin-soldiers of NWO themselfs.

Yes, duffbrainard, Segretti was the head of the "Dirty Tricks" team for Nixon's Re-Election Team..CREEP.. and eventually served 4 months of a 6-month sentence on misdemeanor counts. I entered the Army in Nov 1969, and in May '70, I had just shipped to my duty station in Stuttgart, Germany. We heard all about this on AFN..the American Forces Network, and in the Stars ans Stripes while overseas. Many of the Ohio Guardsmen were guys exactly like me..just doing their time in the Guard and attending college...hoping and praying to NOT go to Vietnam. But, if their units were activated, the had to get on planes and head to Vietnam, too, just like Guard units of today and going back until the American Revolution. They were "dog-faced GIs" just like the rest of us. Why in God's Name they had live ammo locked and loaded is far, far beyond my simple mind's comprehension! Some poor 20-year old kid who had flipped the safety off, accidentally pulled the trigger in chaos/confusion/panic and an entire squad fired a volley. Hell! They still had M-14s for crying out loud! A real tragedy in the fabric of American history, and CSN+Y's commentary is apropos..even up until this very moment.

Yes you are correct Jim, and as a member of the military myself, at the time this happened, we were shocked, at the tragedy. My best friend was from Ohio and knew the Nat. Guard Members involved in this tragedy. Hopefully we have learned from this event. There was mistakes made on both sides.

Joseph - It is important that it is talked about today. There are many images of Southern youth not being that interested is the anti war movement so events like Jacksonville are over looked by the media today! And even at the time...

The difference in Viet Nam and KSU was that WE knew They were LOCKED AND LOADED! There is no comparison. Please try and understand.
